17. Spirituality, Fairy Tales and Weather Gods

10 februari 2016 - Henderson Bay, Nieuw-Zeeland

The next day we continued our trip to Cape Reinga. With a packed car and no idea how long it would take to visit Cape Reinga and the Sand Dunes, we decided to leave our stuff at the hostel that we’ve booked closer to the Northern point of New Zealand. The hostel was owned by a woman that was originally from Canada and after some getting some advice from her, we left for our main attraction of that day. The weather gods were on our side, because while driving we’ve seen nothing but rain until we got to Cape Reinga. The weather cleared up and it was a great day to see the most spiritual place of New Zealand, or so “they” say it is the most spiritual place… In the end I liked the view and the story around it, but I didn’t really feel the spirituality that was promised. Thankfully it wasn’t packed with tourists and we manage to take some great photos (and a video) of “The Meeting Point”.

We decided to pay a visit to the Sand Dunes as well, which was a long walk up to get to one of the highest dunes. The view was nice and it was like being in a desert. In the great distance I could even see The Hole in The Rock, which was a weird thing to see because I’ve been visiting that place a couple of days before that by boot.

The Hole in the Rock in the distance

It looked like someone had just put it there and I couldn’t believe that I could see it from this point. Just when we were about to leave the dunes, it started to rain again. On our way back to the hostel, we’ve seen some amazing rainbows that were impossible to photograph because of their size.

We’ve learned from our experience with the mosquitos the day before and went to see another place that was recommended by the Canadian woman: The Pink Beach. Of course the walk to that beach wasn’t without bugs as well and we started laughing about our “bug-filled” road trip so far. We arrived at the beach and clouds were building up. Because of the sunset that we weren’t able to see because the sun was setting on the other side of the island, the sky showed the most beautiful colours. With pink, blue, yellow, orange and grey colours in the sky and a pink beach itself it looked like a fantasy world. Never had I seen so much beauty and to finish the view…a full rainbow appeared above the water surface.

This fairy-tale was complete.

The fairy-tale was complete

We went back to the hostel when it started to rain and had a nice evening with the three of us talking about everything. Amazing how easy it is to feel comfortable with some people after just meeting them a couple of days before that and be able to do a road trip that you will remember for a long time.

The next day we didn’t know where to go yet, all I knew was that I had to be back in Auckland before the weekend would start, because I’ve promised to volunteer at the event of the Biggest Waterslide.

However, I had no idea that the weekend that was coming would be the weekend that I like to name “The Weekend of the Lifesavers”….
